Internet TV vs cable TV: what’s the difference?

How the signal arrives

Cable TV in many U.S. homes still uses a dedicated plant: coax, a set-top or CableCARD-era device, and channels mapped by the operator. Internet TV uses the broadband connection you already pay for.

When the internet is down, internet TV is down. Cable video can sometimes survive a data outage, depending on how the operator built the plant. The reverse is also true: a cable video outage may leave streaming intact.

Equipment

Cable often rents a box. Internet TV uses a Smart TV app, a stick, a computer, or an Android TV Box. You still need a display and a remote you can live with.

Channel lineups are not interchangeable

A cable lineup is a negotiated bundle. An internet TV service is whatever that service is actually authorized to deliver. Do not assume sports blackouts, local affiliates, or premium networks match a cable guide.

When cable still wins

If you need a specific local broadcast, a particular regional sports network, or a technician who will come to the house under an operator SLA, a traditional or vMVPD product may be the honest fit. Choose based on rights and reliability, not slogans.
